Re: Comments on Blounts Creek Wastewater Discharge
To Whom It May Concern,
The Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina (CCANC) wishes to
officially submit comment regarding the issuance of permits allowing wastewater
discharge into the headwaters of Blounts Creek. As stated the permits would allow
upwards of 9 million gallons of wastewater to be discharged daily from a proposed
rock quarry directly into the headwaters of Blounts Creek, which ultimately feeds
the Pamlico River.
Many species of important estuarine fish, including striped bass, speckled sea
trout, and red drum, are found in the sheltered waters of Blounts Creek. These fish
spend much of their life cycle in Blounts Creek and surrounding estuarine and
fresh waters. Blounts Creek is a productive and popular fishing and recreational
area. The huge influx of waste water from the aquifer every day will change the
fragile and productive ecology of Blounts Creek and surrounding waters and would
undoubtedly have an adverse effect on these coastal resources.
As such, CCA NC opposes the offering of any permits allowing wastewater
discharge from the proposed quarry.
Respectfully submitted,
