Are we really expected to believe their claim that pumping this much water into a brackish estuary would have no detrimental effect on the water quality and the wildlife? Our estuaries are crucial for the continuation of many species of fish. Destroying this habitat would have a devastating effect on our fish populations. With fewer fish in the creek, there will be fewer fishermen visiting our area and spending their money in our county. Businesses that cater to fishermen and tourists will be negatively affected. There is also the question of the impact of wasting so much fresh water. Drinkable water is a valuable resource that is becoming increasingly more expensive. Not only would Martin Marietta's proposal change the creek, but it would also affect the water levels in the county. We are the stewards of our water resources and need to protect them. I am not totally opposed to a mining operation and the jobs it can bring to Beaufort County. But allowing one business to destroy an essential brackish estuary and lower our aquifer is very short - sighted and not in the best interests of all the citizens of the county. Martin Marietta Materials Corporation has indicated that there are other options but that they may be more costly. These options should be explored if Martin Marietta is do business here. Sincerely, Donna Alligood Nipple 271 Blue Heron Drive Blounts Creek, NC
