Dear Mr Chuck Wakild,
We are writing as representatives of Middle Creek Landing. We are a group of women
who center our activities on the water and waterfront of Blounts Creek. We fish and boat
and enjoy spending time together on the waterfront. We are against the proposed
discharge permit and 401 water quality certification for Martin Marietta Materials, Inc.
We oppose the discharge of millions of gallons of groundwater into the Blounts Creek
headwaters every day. We think the adverse effects on our environment will be
overwhelming. We are afraid there will be negative impacts on temperature, pH,
turbidity, heavy metals and the overall ecosystem of the creek. Blounts Creek is
flourishing and it is our responsibility as citizens to not harm it in any way.
We are also concerned with the impact on the Castle Hayne aquifer and that the increased
flow into the creek will raise the water level. Blounts Creek's water level is strongly
influenced by wind. Any additional water in the creek could possibly raise the level to
the point that our piers will be flooded more frequently.
Please do not approve the current proposed discharge for Martin Marietta, Inc.
