Schweinitz's sunflower(Helianthus schweinitzii)
In general, suitable habitat for Schweinitz's sunflower occurs in disturbed areas with full to partial
sun such as roadside edges and railroad rights-of-way. These land uses do occur in the project
area. Soils that typically support Schweinitz's sunflower include Golston, Tatum, Herndon, and
Hiawassee. None of these soils occur in the project vicinity, which is mapped as Urban Land.
Project area vegetation is regularly maintained and kept free of woody growth. Project area
vegetation is dominated by a dense stand of kudzu vines that deters the establishment of other
vegetation(see photo below).
Systematic surveys of suitable habitat were conducted by Axiom biologists on September 12,
2018. In addition, a review of N.C.Natural Heritage Program(NCNHP)records dated September
21, 2018, indicates no known occurrences within 1.0 mile of the study area. The proposed project
will have No Effect on Schweinitz's sunflower.
