Aid No: Not assigned yet Funding: State Federal Federal Permit(s): Yes No Permit Type(s): USACE, USFS Project Description: NCDOT’s Division 14 proposes to replace Haywood Bridge 57 on I-40 at Forest Service Road 288 and Cold Springs Creek Road. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for this project is the study area shown in red on the HPOWeb map shown below. SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW Description of review activities, results, and conclusions: Bridge 57 was constructed in 1968 and was reviewed for eligibility during the 2005 statewide survey of historic bridges. It was not determined eligible in 2005 because it is the most common type (steel stringer) of bridge design that was constructed across the state with more than 2,100 examples built from 1915 to 1960. It is neither technologically nor architecturally significant. HPOWeb confirms that there are no NR-listed or eligible properties within the project APE. NCDOT architectural historian also visited the project area in April 2019 to review the project area and found no historic structures or landscapes in the project area. Therefore, no historic properties will be affected by the proposed work and the project is in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA. Why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified significant historic architectural or landscape resources in the project area: HPOWeb along with the site visit by a NCDOT architectural historian are reliable for predicting the lack of significant historic architectural or landscape resources in the project area. NCDOT’s 2005 statewide historic bridge survey is also a good resource for determining significance of bridges across the state. 19-04-0018 Project Tracking No. (Internal Use) Historic Architecture and Landscapes NO SURVEY REQUIRED form for Minor Transportation Projects as Qualified in the 2007 Programmatic Agreement.
