Section G: Supplementary Information
5. Endangered Species and Designated Critical Habitat
5i Does this project involve (1) blasting, and/or (2) other percussive activities that will be
conducted by machines, such as jackhammers, mechanized pile drivers, etc.?
The site has potential suitable habitat for Schweinitz’s sunflower (Helianthus schweinitzii).
However, the dense kudzu vine ground cover throughout the site greatly reduces the suitability
of this site for the sunflower. An on-site survey for sunflower in September 2018 found no
individuals of this species, and the N.C. Natural Heritage Program (NCNHP) has no record of
this species within 1 mile of the site.
With regard to the northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis), the site is not in a 12-digit
HUC shown as red on the map and is not within 0.25 mile of a red HUC. The project will not
involve bridge removal or maintenance. There are no documented hibernation or maternity sites
in Rowan County. Although the construction of a tunnel under the railroad, involving driving of
H-poles, and the installation of sheet piling for shoring will require an estimated 4 to 6 months of
intermittent pile and sheet driving, the project is not expected to adversely affect northern long-
eared bat.
