PLANTING PLAN
FOR RIPARIAN RESTORATION AND ENHANCEMENT AREAS
1. CONSTRUCTION WILL BE SEQUENCED FROM AN UPSTREAM TO DOWNSTREAM DIRECTION SUCH
THAT DISTRIBUTED AREAS OF THE PROJECT AREA ARE STABILIZED AT THE END OF EACH
WORKING DAY.
2. DISTURBED AREAS WILL BE SEEDED FOR TEMPORARY GROUND COVER WITH A SEED MIX OF
ANNUAL GRAINS (WINTER RYE, OATS, BROWN -TOP MILLET) AT RATES SPECIFIED BY THE
MANUFACTURER.
3. DISTURBED AREAS WILL BE SEEDED FOR PERMANENT GROUND COVER WITH A NC MOUNTAIN
RIPARIAN MIX AT MANUFACTURER SPECIFIED RATES.
4. SEEDED AREAS WILL BE FERTILIZED AND MULCHED WITH STRAW. FERTILIZER WILL BE
STORED AWAY FROM AND KEPT OUT OF THE STREAM. STRAW MULCH WILL BE PLACED
SUCH THAT SOIL IS STABILIZED AND ADEQUATE LIGHT REACHES THE SOIL LAYER.
5. DISTURBED AREAS BELOW TWO TIMES BANKFULL ELEVATION WILL BE FURTHER STABILIZED
WITH BIODEGRADABLE COIR COCONUT FABRIC WITH A WEIGHT NOT LESS THAN 400 GRAMS
PER SQUARE METER. COIR FABRIC WILL BE INSTALLED OVER SEED AND MULCH, PER THE
MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS.
6. LIVE CUTTINGS WILL BE INSTALLED AS LIVE STAKES AND WHIPS ON THE STREAM BANKS
AND BETWEEN GEOLIFTS AT ELEVATIONS BELOW BANKFULL ON STREAM BANKS WITHIN THE
PROJECT AREA. LIVE CUTTINGS WILL BE SELECTED FROM NATIVE SHRUB SPECIES
INCLUDING: SILKY DOGWOOD (CORONUS AMOMUM), ELDERBERRY (SAMBUCUS NIGRA), AND
NINEBARK (PHYSOCARPUS OPULIFOLIUS). LIVE CUTTINGS WILL BE INSTALLED AT A SPACING
OF APPROXIMATELY ONE FOOT ON CENTER, WHILE DORMANT, DURING LEAF -OFF
7. CONTAINER HERBACEOUS PLANTINGS MAY BE INSTALLED BELOW TWO TIMES BANKFULL
ELEVATION AT A SPACING OF APPROXIMATELY THREE FEET ON CENTER.
8. CONTAINER TREE PLANTINGS MAY BE INSTALLED AS NATIVE SAPLINGS AT A SPACING OF
TEN FEET ON CENTER AND WILL CONSIST OF SPECIES NOT LIMITED TO: RED OAK (QUERCUS
RUBRA), WHITE OAK (QUERCUS ALBA), TULIP POPLAR (LIRIODENDRON TULIPIFERA),
AMERICAN BEECH (FAGUS GRANDIFOLIA), BLACKGUM (NUSSA SULVAIICA), AND RED MAPLE
(ACER RUBRUM).
9. THE SITE WILL BE WATERED REGULARLY DURING DRY PERIODS UNTIL A HEARTY STAND OF
HERBACEOUS VEGETATION IS ESTABLISHED OVER ALL DISTURBED AREAS WITH A HEIGHT OF
AT LEAST SIX INCHES.
10. PLANTING OF THE PROJECT AREA WILL GENERALLY FOLLOW AND ACHIEVE DENSITIES
OUTLINED IN A GUIDE FOR THE INSTALLATION. ESTABLISHMENT. AND MAINTENANCE OF
RIPARIAN VEGETATION ON RESTORATION PROJECTS IN NORTH CAROLINA - NC COOPERATIVE
