IN SITU REMEDIATION (15A NCAC 02C .0225 ) or TRACER WELLS (ISA NCAC 02C .0229): 1) Passive Injection S vstems -In-well delivery systems to diffuse injectants into the subsurface. Examples include ORC socks, iSOC systems, and other gas infusion methods (Note: Injection Event Records (IER) do not need to be submitted for replacement of each sock used in ORC systems). 2) Small-Scale In jection O perations -Injection wells located within a land surface area not to exceed 10,000 square feet for the purpose of soil or groundwater remediation or tracer tests. An individual permit shall be required for test or treatment areas exceeding 10,000 square feet. 3) Pilot Tests -Preliminary studies conducted for the purpose of evaluating the technical feasibility of a remediation strategy in order to develop a full scale remediation plan for future implementation, and where the surface area of the injection zone wells is located within an area that does not exceed five percent of the land surface above the known extent of groundwater contamination. An individual permit shall be required to conduct more than one pilot test on any separate groundwater contaminant plume. 4) Air In jection Wells -Used to inject ambient air to enhance in-situ treatment of soil or groundwater. 5) In-Situ Thermal Wells (IST)-Used to 'heat' contaminated groundwater to enhance remediation. (3) Potentiometric surface map(s) indicating the rate and direction of groundwater movement, plus existing and proposed wells. I. DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED INJECTION ACTIVITIES AT THE SITE -Provide a brief narrative regarding the cause of the contamination, and pwpose, scope, goals of the proposed injection activity: FT007 is a former fire trainin g area where contaminated fuels . waste chemicals, and uncontaminated fuel were burned. The former fire trainirnr area had an above-!!round storage tank (AST ) with a fuel line that ran to the trainin l!. pit. Durin g fire training exercises , the pit was filled with water prior to addition of a pp roximatel y 500 gallons of fuel that would be i enited and extinguished. An undernround draina ge s ystem collected li quids and drained them to an under gr ound oil/water se parator (OWS ). which then discharned to the sanitary sewers stem. Ozone injection was historicall y compl eted at this site but has not reduced the contaminant concentration below screenine levels. The ozone injection wells are no longer in use and will not be utilized in association with the pro posed injections. The purp ose of the in jection activi ty is to accelerate site closure using potassium persulfate injections. The in jectant material is Provect-OX2 which is an extended release source of potassium persulfate plus a ferric iron activator. In jections will be com pleted in nine direct push borings (see attached Figure H.3 ) at hot s pots identified near performance wells MW-4 lR. MW-105R. and MW-106. The direct push borin e s will be advanced to a predetermined de pth (see attached Table ) then retracted 3.5 feet to ex pose the injection interval. Performance monitorin g will be initiated one month after the in jections and continue quarterly for one vear. If needed a second injection event will be com pleted followin l.! the initial year of performance monitoring . J. L. MONITORING PLAN -Describe below or in separate attachment a monitoring plan to be used to determine if violations of groundwater quality standards specified in Subchapter 02L result from the injection activity. Performance monitorim.!. will be completed quarterly starting one month after the completion of in jections to allow the sodium persulfate to dissi pate. Durin!! the first round of sam pling, prior to purging, field testin g for sodium persulfate will be conducted. If any persulfate is detected in uroundwater during this test, field parameters will not be measured. When uroundwater is sam pled with persulfate present it interferes with water quali tv probes and gi ves false readings. Groundwater sam ples will be anal vzed for VOCs and metals for four quarters. Monitoring data will be utilized to determine if additional injections are re quired. M.
