Beaufort WBS No: 17BP.2.R.15 Document: Minimum Criteria Sheet F. A. No: n/a Funding: ® State ❑ Federal Federal (USACE) Permit Required? ® Yes ❑ No Permit Type: Nationwide Project Description: Replace Bridge No. 241 over Fork Swamp on SR1530 (Baseline Rd) in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Replace the existing 36ft long by 20.Ift wide timber bridge with a proposed pipe /aluminum box culvert. The archaeological APE is defined as a 400ft. long (200ft. from each bridge endpoint) and 60ft wide corridor (row) centered upon the bridge location and SR1530 center -line. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: A map review and site file search was conducted at the Office of State Archaeology on Monday, November 28, 2011. No previously recorded archaeological sites are situated within the currently defined APE, project study area, or general vicinity. A review of NRRP listed archaeological properties /districts within Beaufort County identified no such resources within or adjacent to the presently defined APE. Furthermore, topographic maps, historic maps (NCMaps website), USDA soil survey maps (Me & Ly /poorly drained), archaeological reference materials, and aerial photographs (Google) were utilized/inspected to gauge environmental factors that may have contributed to historic or prehistoric settlement within the project limits, and to assess the level of modern, agricultural, hydrological, and other erosive -type disturbances within and surrounding the archaeological APE. Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: Topographic maps and aerial photographs evidence channelized ditches throughout the agricultural fields that characterize the project study area and those sections surrounding it. This denotes the former and on- going reclaimation of marginal swamp /marsh lands for agricultural pursuits. Prior to the draining of this area, and without any elevated landforms, prehistoric and historic occupants would not have settled in such a formidable and poorly drained swamp environment. Due largely to the diminutive scope of the proposed project and relatively minute construction footprint subsuming only the existing right -of -way, significant archaeological or cultural resources are unlikely to be affected by the project. Aerial photographs and NRCS soil data demonstrate that the project area is largely typified by poorly drained/hydric soils and largely uninhabitable, reclaimed swampland. No further archaeological work is recommended for this Division 2 low impact bridge replacement project.
