Stephen Hummel and Shannon Price were present during the inspection. Erosion issues were reported on May 4, 2021 from a logging operation located at 8357 Hwy. 107 (non-DOT). DOT measures below this site require maintenance due to off site erosion originating from the unstable logging site. Sediment was not observed in a JS; however, the site remains unstable and is contributing to turbidity issues in the Tuckasegee based on observation from NCDOT staff. I will coordinate with the delegated program that has jurisdiction over the site (NC Forest Service or Jackson County Erosion Control). Regarding tree clearing at Wall #4. DWR does not have any restrictions on tree remvoal; however, we do have concerns with removing riparian trees in the trout buffer. This could have an effect on temperature standards and bank stability. Please coordinate these activities with the Divison Environmental staff and only remove/limb what is required for sweep radius of the drill rig. Continue to maintain measures at Wall 1 and 4 and coordinate these efforts with Roadside Environmental.
