Project Description: Replace Bridge Number 230 on SR 2250 (Beck's Church Road) over
Pounder Fork (no off-site detour specified in review request).
SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW
Description of review activities, results, and conclusions: HPOWeb reviewed on 12 June 2017 and
yielded no NR, SL, LD, DE, or SS properties in the Area of Potential Effects (APE). Davidson County
current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a mostly wooded APE with
virtually no above-ground resources (viewed 12 June 2017). The APE intersects several large parcels on
one of which stand circa-1990s outbuildings at some distance east of the existing bridge. A second large
parcel contains the National Register-listed Beck's Reformed Church Cemetery (DV0502). The cemetery
is located about 700 feet south of the bridge, outside the APE and well beyond likely project impact(see
attached map). Construction plans should note its presence and prohibit the storage or staging of
materials and equipment within its borders. Bridge No. 230, built in 1964, is not eligible for the National
Register as it is not representative of any distinctive engineering or aesthetic type. Google Maps"Street
View"confirmed the absence of critical historic structures and landscapes in the APE (viewed 12 June
2017).
No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined.
Why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there
are no unidentified significant historic architectural or landscape resources in the project
area: APE extends 400 feet from either end of the existing bridge (SW-NE)and 150 feet to either side of
the SR 2250 (Beck's Church Road) centerline (NW-SE) to encompass proposed construction activities.
The comprehensive county architectural survey (1981) and later investigations recorded no properties in
the project area (Paul B.Touart, Building the Backcountry: The Architectural History of Davidson County,North Carolina
([Lexington, NC]:The Davidson County Historical Association, 1987)) apart from that noted above. County GIS/tax
materials and other visuals clearly illustrate the relative placement of the cemetery and the absence of
architectural or landscape resources of concern in the APE.
Should the design of the project change, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture
as additional review may be necessary.
