I bought a home that was a mini-Superfund site. The previous owners
showed nothing but contempt for the lake shore, dumping all their
trash, and building shoddy structures along the shore. I have
removed all the garbage but now need to fix the dock. It was poorly
built and not maintained at all. The wood is rotten, broken and sliding
into the water.
I was told the design is no longer permitted but allowed to be
replaced board -for -board because I am grandfathered in. However,
there is a reason it is no longer permitted and I'm trying to make the
most informed and ecologically -sound decisions.
I was told shoreline stabilization would be an effective and safe
alternative to repairing the current deck.
The walls would be built of 2X6s, placed onto the lake bottom then
secured with 4X6 posts. Through the posts, carriage bolts would be
placed and anchoring wires staked into the ground. Small rock would
back fill this, and bring the nearly up to grade. This covering would
nearly bury the remaining deck fragments. They can be removed to a
landfill if this is preferable.
A final coat of small white pebbles would be placed on top.
This is something I have seen frequently around the lake.
