We would like to add a 4 post sling lift to our existing dock. We
applied for a General Permit last year but did not get approved due
to only having 19 inches of water. We needed 24 inches since we are
in a primary nursery. We are now applying for a major permit.

221 Stewart Dr Boat Lift Project Narrative
We would like to add a boat lift to our existing dock at 221 Stewart Dr Beaufort, NC 28516. We
applied for a general permit last year but were denied due to water depth requirements. The field
officer measured 19 inches at low tide, and we needed 24 inches since we are in a primary nursery, so
we were 5 inches short of that requirement. Now we are applying for a major permit to hopefully be
able to complete our project with. Our dock is already at the maximum allowable length we cannot go
out any further to get into deeper water as that would be more than 25% of the distance across the
waterway. 15 feet further out from where we want to put the lift the water is much deeper and most
likely more than 24 inches. We have been docking our boat at a plastic floating dock for the last 30
years that my grandfather installed when he built the original dock in the 1980's. Our neighbors with the
dock next to us also have a boat lift that is this same style a sling lift using straps and they are about 270
feet away from our dock. We feel that it would be better for the environment to have a lift that would
keep the boat out of the water instead of staying in it. Our plan is to use a sling lift with straps and not
a cradle lift that would have a metal structure in the water so that we can minimize the possibility of
disturbing the bottom below the lift. Our boat is a flat bottom and only drafts 10 inches of water as well
so that will also minimize this. We will also be installing limiters which do not allow the lift to drop too
low. This is another measure we are taking to prevent any disturbance on the bottom at the proposed
boat lift site.
