Dear Erik Lensch,
NORTH CAROLINA

Subject: Permit No. WQ0037792
8591 Pickards Meadow Road
Surface Irrigation Wastewater Treatment
and Disposal System
Chatham County
On February 23, 2021, staff of the NC Division of Water Resources (DWR), Water Quality Regional Operations
Section (WQROS), inspected the subject single family residence surface drip irrigation wastewater treatment and
disposal system. I would like to thank Brandon with McFarland Septic for his assistance during this inspection.
The purpose of the visit was to conduct a compliance inspection.
On the day of the inspection all single family residence wastewater treatment and application equipment appeared
to be well maintained and working properly. The drip field was in good condition and no leaks were detected.
During the inspection, it was observed that two additional pipes were coming from the house under the driveway
and draining to the surface of the drip field. One pipe appears to be connected to the gutters and the other is
believed to be backwash from a filtration system inside the house. Both of these point source discharges add
additional flow directly to the drip irrigation site. This adds to the hydraulic loading for the field. Please re-
position the pipes so that all of the water discharged does not enter the drip area (fenced area). Only effluent from
the single-family residence shall be irrigated on the site.
In a previous letter dated February 28, 2018 the Division asked for the chicken houses to be moved to a location
outside of the wastewater irrigation field. The houses were moved off of the drip area but remain within the
fenced area allowing the birds continue to roam freely within the wastewater irrigation field. Please move the
houses and birds to a location off of and out of the irrigation field.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (919) 791-4200 or jane.bernard@ncdenr.gov.
