(In the past we have done only Polyester Polymer Concrete (PPC), but we are expanding this type of overlay material to allow Epoxy Polymer Concrete (EPC) overlays. Surface preparation and placement of the two polymer concrete materials are essentially the same.) For Polymer Concrete overlays, the deck is prepared by removing a minimum 3/4" depth of the existing concrete deck by scarification. After scarification, the deck is checked to determine if areas of unsound concrete or patching that require additional removal remain in the deck. Afterward, any areas requiring deeper removal are repaired with the polymer concrete material,up to the elevation of the scarification. The deck area is then cleaned by shotblasting to further remove small deleterious material and to clean the concrete deck surface. As required by our Special Provisions and Specifications, all material removed by scarification and shotblasting is collected and removed from the bridge and disposed of properly. The area is primed with high molecular weight methacrylate (HMWM) for PPC overlays or epoxy resin for EPC overlays. After a short waiting period (approximately 15-30 minutes), the PC overlay in placed. After the overlay has sufficiently hardened other operations—such as grooving of the surface, and installation of the joints and seals - are performed. During the course of all of this work, as required by our Special Provisions and Specifications, all bridge deck expansion joints, deck drains, and other sections in the immediate work area of the bridge affected by the work being performed are sealed prior to beginning scarification or demolition. The expansion joints and other items remain sealed until it has been determined that water and materials from the scarification, shotblasting, and PC placement operations cannot be discharged through them any longer. The Contractor required is to take all steps necessary to eliminate the flow of water or materials through the expansion joints, and any other locations water or materials could leak from the deck Let me if this will suffice Jeff Hemphill Senior Environmental Specialist Environmental Analysis Unit North Carolina Department of Transportation 919 707 6126 office jhemphill@ncdot.gov 1598 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1598 1020 Birch Ridge Drive Raleigh, NC 27610 1 r • , From: Wanucha, Dave<dave.wanucha@ncdenr.gov> Sent: Monday, April 5, 2021 3:28 PM To: Hemphill,Jeffrey L<jhemphill@ncdot.gov> Cc:Alsmeyer, Eric C CIV USARMY CESAW (US) (Eric.C.Alsmeyer@usace.army.mil) <Eric.C.Alsmeyer@usace.army.mil> Subject: B-4626 deck preservation treatment Hey Jeff, Please provide additional information regarding proposed Bridge 8 deck preservation treatment. For example, a paragraph would suffice that describes the process, materials used and how DOT's contractors conduct the operation including minimization efforts in relation to any discharges to the Yadkin River/Tuckertown Reservoir. We need to review the requested information, prior to issuance of the 401 Certification. Thanks. Dave W.
