It is not valid for Historic Architecture and Landscapes. You must consult separately with the Historic Architecture and Landscapes Group. PROJECT INFORMATION Project No: B-5870 County: Burke WBS No: 17BP.13.R.165 Document: State Minimum Criteria Checklist Federal Aid No: Funding: State Federal Federal Permit Required? Yes No Permit Type: USACE Project Description: Replace Bridge 155 on SR 1410 (Goodman Lake Rd.) over Irish Creek in Burke County. Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 427 meters (1,400 ft.) long and 60 meters (200 ft.) wide. The A.P.E. includes the area within 214 meters (700 ft.) from each end of the bridge and 30 meters (100 ft.) on each side of the centerline. No design plans provided. NOTE: This project (with a smaller A.P.E.) was first reviewed in 2016 . A No Archaeological Survey Required form was submitted on 6/8/2016. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: The review included an examination of a topographic map, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The bridge is oriented northwest to southeast, but is consdered north-south for this review. The topographic map (Oak Hill, N.C.) shows the A.P.E. is located in a developed part of the Morganton/Oak Hill metropolitan area. The landforms in the A.P.E. appear to be floodplain next to the stream and moderately-sloped ridge toes on each side of the valley. The west side of the road is depicted as developed. (It is shaded gray and shows less detail.) The map appears to show an earlier route of SR 1410 (as a dotted line alongside the existing road). The aerial photograph (with slope/contour lines) shows the landuse in the A.P.E. is a mix of wooded and residential. The northwest quadrant is residential yards and driveways at the north end. The northeast quadrant appears to wooded yards for two houses. SR 1494 (Cam Rd.) intersects with SR 1410 near the bridge. The southwest quadrant is wooded next to the bridge and a residential yard at the south end. The southeast quadrant is wooded. There is a driveway/road near the middle. This may be a remnant of the old road location. The contour lines show that most of the landforms in the A.P.E. are moderately to steeply-sloped. A review of information at the O.S.A. shows there are no previously recorded archaeological sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. The A.P.E. has not been previously surveyed for “No ARCHAEOLOGY SURVEY REQUIRED” form for Minor Transportation Projects as Qualified in the 2015 Programmatic Agreement. 1 of 7 Project Tracking No. 16-02-0037 archaeological sites. The A.P.E. is not located within any projects that have been reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: The sloped ridges in the A.P.E. have low to moderate potential for archaeological sites. Much of the A.P.E. appears to be disturbed by residential development.
