SUBJECT Start of Study Letter for Improvements at the intersection of Shannon Road (SR 100 1)
with NC 211 Robeson County, North Carolina WBS No 45537 1 14 STIP Project
No W 5206N
NCDOT Division 6 has begun studying the proposed safety improvements to STIP Project
No W 5206N The project area is located in the immediate vicinity of the intersection of Shannon
Road and NC 211 which is approximately 6 5 miles northwest of the City of Lumberton (figures —
attached) The proposed improvements include realigning the intersection and adding dedicated
turning lanes to improve safety The project is federally funded and is anticipated to proceed with
development of a Programmatic Categorical Exclusion in accordance with the National Environmental
Policy Act of 1969 as amended The project is included in the 2012 2020 North Carolina
Transportation Improvement Program and is scheduled for right of way acquisition in fiscal year 2013
and construction in fiscal year 2014
We would appreciate any information you might have that would be helpful in evaluating
potential environmental impacts of the project If applicable, please identify any permits or approvals
that may be required by your agency Your comments will be used in the preparation of a
Programmatic Categorical Exclusion We would appreciate your comments by September 29, 2012
