The nature of this project consists of development of a 10' wide multi -use trail surrounding the majority of Village Point Lake. A 30' (Buffer from the shoreline surrounds the lake and will primarily remain undisturbed; however, there are areas along the perimeter where construction will take place within the buffer. Various adjustments were made during the design phase of the project in order to minimize and limit impacts within the buffer area. One of the primary areas are three (3) stream crossings which are located at different areas of the project. These streams are located within the buffer and will be necessary to cross in order to develop the project. Two (2) boardwalks and a bridge are proposed to be used to cross these areas. In some areas, the existing grade is steeper outside the buffer than within the buffer, which would result in more grading and disturbed area in order to construct the greenway outside the buffer rather than encroach within the buffer. In addition, some areas encroach the buffer in order to achieve the accessibility requirement for slope of the trail. This accessibility requirement is necessary to meet NCDOT standards for the project. In addition to elements listed above, there are areas of the project which have a very limited width of property from the buffer to the Village property line.
