The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Ferry
Division is requesting authorization for the construction of a dock and
dolphin at the Southdock Ferry Terminal
The US ACE is in need of a spot to tie up their dredge while on the
Ocracoke side of Hatteras Inlet, and the Ferry Division has the ability
to provide such a location with the installation of one dolphin and one
50'x 8'dock.The dock would begin above the bulkhead,
approximately 75'to northeast of the north ferry ramp and 5'north of
the northernmost dolphins. It would extend 50'into the water, running
parallel to the existing dolphins.The dock would be 8'wide and would
be supported by 8 new treated timber piles.The location of the piles
is depicted in the attached drawings which display their positioning on
each end of the dock,as well as their positioning 17'from each end.
The installation of this dock would allow the US ACE to offload their
dredge safely and as intended, rather than having to offload from the
bow. Dock construction would not involve running any utility lines.
The installation of one dolphin is also needed so that the US ACE can
properly tie down their vessel.The dolphin would be constructed by
driving one steel tube and then driving timber piles around it.The
dolphin would be wrapped and secured with steel cable. It would be
located at the coordinates 35.190197,-75.780200 which would place
it approximately 44'to the northwest of the outermost existing dolphin,
while remaining parallel with the other dolphins.
