Bridge No. 136 on SR 1561 (Liberty Hill Road) over South Yadkin River
Iredell County
Potential Percussive Activities
The construction of the new bridge over the South Yadkin River has the potential to generate
some percussive activities in the form of pile driving equipment, hoe rams, and jack hammers.
Construction of the two-end bends will require the driving of 14 H-piles, 7 in each end bent. The
driving of these piles will take approximately 8-10 days to complete. In addition, hoe rams
and/or jack hammers will be used to dismantle the old bridge components, which were washed
downstream during the flood event. Retrieval of the old bridge components will take
approximately 4-5 days. Noise generated from these activities could potentially impact nearby
roosting habitat of the Northern long-eared bat (NLEB). Review of the NCNHP database, dated
December 17, 2020, indicated that the nearest NLEB is located approximately 34 miles
northwest of the project area. In addition, there are currently no known hibernaculum or
maternity roost trees located in the six Division 12 counties; therefore, a “May Affect, Not
Likely to Adversely Affect” determination is warranted for northern long-eared bat.
