Dear Mr. Lopez:
DAK Americas installed a disinfection system in January 2012 that uses sodium hypochlorite. The sodium hypochiorite is
added to the wastewater from Clear Path Recycling prior to thewastewater treatment plant.
DAK is evaluating a UV system to replace the sodium hypochlorite system. This project will be evaluated based on the
effectiveness and cost compared to the existing sodium hypochiorite system. If it is determined that the proposed UV
system is economically feasible as a replacement for the sodium hypochlorite system, capital funding will be sought.
The engineering evaluation should be completed by December 31, 2012.

Dear Ms. Wike,
I spoke with Belinda Henson about DAK's FC spreadsheet results that you sent in your email (below), and about
my understanding from our phone conversation on Wednesday. Please send me an email stating DAK's plans with a
proposed timeline. We encourage you to install a disinfection system so as to meet the following:
15A NCAC 02B .0211 FRESH SURFACE WATER QUALITY STANDARDS FOR CLASS C WATERS (3) (e)
"Organisms of the coliform group: fecal coliforms shall not exceed a geometric mean of 200/100m1
(MF count) based upon at Least five consecutive samples examined during any 30 day period, nor
exceed 400/100m1 in more than 20 percent of the samples examined during such period."

Subject: UV status at DAK
Hi Belinda,
Today I phoned James Burke at DAK for an update of the UV status. According to the June 27, 2012 letter from
Craig Leite (DAK Plant Manager) they had anticipated being ready to submit an ATC application by October 1, 2012. Mr.
Burke said that they had run into some problems with the location for the UV being in the Chlorine Contact Chamber
unit, as they had originally planned. They are still planning to install a UV system, but possibly at a different location.
Mr. Burke will phone me or send us a written schedule in approximately ten days. He hopes to submit a Purchase Order
by the end of this year. On the brighter side, Mr. Burke said that the FC numbers have gone down to the 75 col/100 mL
range since the brominator and the hypochlorinator have been in service at the Clear Path Recycling Plant, before CPR
discharges into the DAK WWTP.
Thanks,
Dale
