Section D: Summary of Finding/Comments (Attach additional sheets of narrative and checklists as necessary)
Mikal Willmer, with the Asheville Regional Office, conducted a compliance evaluation inspection of the
Tryon Finishing's sedimentation basins and sand filter beds and associated outfalls on February 10,
2021. This inspection was conducted to determine whether the facility is being operated and
maintained in compliance NPDES Permit No. NC0048305. Deborah Bradley, ORC, and Naiden
Kremenliev, President Tryon Finishing, were present and assisted in the inspection.
Facility is classified physical chemical. Industrial process wastewater is discharged to the Town of
Tryon’s collection system under their IUP. The water discharged to the creek is generated during the
treatment of the facility's freshwater pond water. Last discharged from the sand filter beds and
secondary sedimentation (001 and 002) basin in 2016. Facility has been primarily using city water.
Tryon Finishing staff indicated they were only using one filter and discharging every few months (003).
Currently using significantly less water and have not needed to clean the basins since purchasing the
facility. The facility's boiler has not been used since 2018. Water use will increase once the boiler is put
back into service. No current plans to upgrade any parts of the water treatment system.
Equipment is aging (approximately 40 to 50 years old) but reported to still be operational. It was noted
the access steps to the sedimentation basin at the top of the hill are broken and present a safety
hazard to workers. Should the system be put into use full time, Tryon Finishing should provide safe
access for routine maintenance. Additionally, ensure all liquid totes stored on the pavement outside do
not drain or have the potential to discharge to any onsite stormwater systems.
