Re North Carolina Granite Corporation Surry County, North Carolina (Action
ID SAW 2011 01765)
Dear Ms Euliss
I am writing in reference to your email to Michael Wood dated July 16 2012 in which
you requested clarification and additional information relating to the proposed impacts
associated with the modifications to the Ararat River at the North Carolina Granite
Corporation (NCGC) in Mount Airy Surry County North Carolina
The original permit application for the proposed structures requested that all past
activities be authorized This was unclear we want to confirm that there will be no
permanent dam in the river as part of this project
Additionally clarification was requested for the amount fill (linear feet and cubic yards)
associated with each proposed structure Below is a table that includes this information
The weir that was previously permitted is approximately 185 linear feet long and
approximately 600 cubic feet of fill
Installation of the proposed structures will require working in the river The Ararat River
is too large to dewater during construction of the proposed structures Baker
Engineering in the design plans for the proposed structures detailed the sequence of
constructions activities which is enclosed As feasible construction will be conducted
from the banks but work within the river will need to be permitted

NCGC received a permit April 26 2011 to place temporary fill in the river as needed
while waiting for the current permit application to be processed This permit has not
been utilized to date It is not anticipated that NCGC will need to utilize these temporary
actions However in the event that water levels in the Ararat River fall during this
current permit application nrocess and onerations at the quarry are impacted the
structures may still need to be installed We request that you do not rescind the
temporary permit until the proposed structures are permitted and construction begins
We are very appreciative of your time and assistance with this matter If we can provide
additional information to facilitate this application please contact me at 919 732 1300
(office) or 919 417 8027 (mobile)
