HomeMy WebLinkAbout20020459 Ver 1_Staff Comments_20120712d)- oq59 Kulz, Eric From Kulz Eric Sent Thursday July 12 2012 10 09 AM To Tugwell Todd SAW Subject Clayhill Farm Attachments Clayhill Farm Closeout Figure pdf Clayhill Farm topo pdf Clayhill Farm Soils pdf Clayhill Farm LIDAR pdf Hey Todd I have been meaning to look into this further for a while and I finally got to it Please excuse all of the attachments, but I feel like we are going to need this at some point I need to send them in separate emails as I could not send all at once I have attached the closeout figure, the "stream" starts near the western property boundary The topo shows a valley with a stream starting in the central portion of the site, around where we saw the change in character on site The soils map shows a feature extending most of the way onto the western side of the site, and is likely the former stream /ditch that was there before the "restoration" was done The soils on the site are all hydric (some a and some B), but the descriptions don't really sound like alluvial soils The UDAR is quite informative There is no semblance of a valley on the western half of the site In fact there is a ridgeline (old road ?) on the west side of the site So their "stream" actually crosses a ridgeline I have been messing around with a website called USGS streamstats Attached is a topo with the National Hydrography Dataset overlain It actually shows a stream feature originating on the west side of the site and flowing west I also calculated watershed sizes on the site At the top end of the NHD blue line the watershed is 20 acres (TOP on map)A little further down (A on map) the watershed is 27 acres At the confluence with the trib from the north (B on map) the watershed is 108 acres I have attached a summary of Periann's watershed size data from her stream mapping project As you can see, the mean watershed size for a stream origin in the Carolina Flatwoods is 36 acres So based on watershed size, it is possible that the original stream origin was somewhere on the western half of the site, it was not at the western edge of the site, as this crosses the ridgeline We still plan to go out in January or February and give it a thorough look However I have my doubts Eric W Kulz Environmental Senior Specialist N C Division of Water Quality Program Development Unit 1650 MSC Raleigh NC 27699 -1650 Phone (919) 807 -6476 Please note this is a new phone number effective May 10, 2012 Fax (919) 807 -6488 E -mail correspondence to and from this address may be subject to the North Carolina Public Records Law and may be disclosed to third parties -L6-- ?
