Macon County
The North Carolina Department of Transportation(NCDOT)needs to replace a section of
washed-out drainage pipe that carries an unnamed tributary to the Cullasaj a River under US 64 in
Macon County,North Carolina. The project area has approximate center coordinates of
-83.229165 W, 35.072061 N. Maps of the project area are attached. The project will be
federally-funded with the Federal Highway Administration serving as the lead for compliance
with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act(NHPA) and the National
Environmental Policy Act(NEPA).
The majority of the project area has been disturbed by prior highway construction and
maintenance. Disturbance of previously undisturbed ground is not anticipated,however due to
extremely steep slopes here it may be necessary to extend an access road for heavy equipment
along and approximately 20-25 feet west of the base of the existing road toe-of-slope. This

disturbance would be primarily placement of fill to build-up a road rather than excavation into
parent ground. All potentially disturbed areas are shown in the attached study area map (see gold
bordered polygon). There are no drawings for the work since it only involves replacement of a
pipe section(approximately 20 feet) followed by replacement of rock plating where it previously
was around the pipe outlet.

properties of traditional religious or cultural importance that you are aware of that may be
affected by the proposed project. Be assured that,in accordance with confidentiality and
disclosure stipulations in Section 304 of the NHPA,we will maintain strict confidentiality about
certain types of information regarding historic properties. Your comments may be included in
NEPA or NC Environmental Policy Act documentation.
