Subject: Buttigieg Residence Seawall - NCWRC comments
Hi David and Kaylie:
I have reviewed the information sent to me about the Buttigieg Residence Seawall project, which involves the
replacement of 175 ft of existing timber seawall with a concrete block seawall, permanently impacting 0.06
acre and temporarily impacting 0.04 acre of L. Toxaway in Transylvania County. The project should not
impact wild trout and a trout moratorium is not needed for this project.
Please note that concrete should be allowed to completely cure (at least 24 hours) in the dry in order to avoid
dangerous pH levels in the lake.
Aerial photography reveals a forested buffer along the shore. The shoreline provides important habitat for
wildlife. Trees and shrubs above the waterline not only stabilize banks but also serve as habitat for wildlife
such as song birds; efforts should be taken to retain as many trees and shrubs as possible. Fallen trees and
other large woody debris along the shoreline are especially important, providing cover for various sunfish,
largemouth bass, and other fishes in the lake. Large woody debris should be left in place or moved
temporarily and replaced after stabilization work is complete.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to review this project.
Andrea
