Subject: Proposed modification in commodity feed mixing area on Fox Farm
On February 9, 2021 we, (Michael Melinger, NCDEQ; Will Faulkner, NRCS; Jonathan
Creason and Jim Summers, Iredell SWCD) met with you to discuss to changes in your
commodity feed mixing area. After much discussion the agreement was as follows:
1. All feed mixing will be performed under roof inside the commodity storage
building. This will greatly reduce the amount of feed washing off this area during
rain events.
2. The drainage grate in middle of concrete apron at commodity barn will be filled
with concrete and covered with a metal plate. This will prevent waste grain and
silage leachate from being discharged into Beaver Creek.
3. Presently one day's worth of silage is stored on this lot daily and fed that day.
This helps with the efficiency of the feed mixing operation. Since all silage is
removed daily through the feeding operation all ponded leachate and waste silage
will be cleaned up and mixed back into the feed. If leachate begins to pond and
run off the lot Koopman Dairies will handle this in a timely manner to prevent run
off.
4. The exiting lot is graded towards the grate that will be covered. When this is
done some storm storage will be available and excess runoff will drain across
grass buffer below lot.
5. The blue line stream coming out of the pond above this area will be rerouted and
piped down the side of existing farm road. This new pipe for the stream is to be
installed before the grate is sealed off, to make sure that there is no additional
flow into the existing pipe. The new pipe. will be put back into the existing drop
box and culvert under Seed House Road and then into Beaver Creek. Please see
attached map.
6. Surface runoff will be regraded and redirected away from this feed mixing area.
