Some will have shrubs planted in them, but the specifications indicate that the contractor may not cut the coir mat netting, but must instead spread the coir mat ropes by hand to insert the shrubs. I have found this improves the longevity effectiveness of the coir mat. Currently the stream banks and over banks are relatively stable even where this is only turfgrass. Our modeling and observations indicate that, despite removing the gabion baskets, we expect the banks to remain stable. In the most potentially vulnerable areas we will be using boulder toes as well. Finally, we will preserve the existing trees that appear to have the best existing root structure that is currently protecting the banks. As such, we expect that the herbaceous vegetation (permanent seeding) can stabilize protect the remaining bank (which will also be covered by coir mat). The Town is committed to providing direction to the maintenance staff on proper maintenance of the vegetation as well. What species are you using for your vegetated soil lifts? Where you are not installing these lifts, will you be live staking the banks or solely seeding them? It also includes our permanent seeding lists. Some of the turf -type permanent seeding is for the open space areas beyond the restoration area that will be disturbed during construction. The proposed canopy and midstory trees are displayed at more mature state than we are proposing to plant (i.e. 2-ich caliper and 5 gallon, etc.). Part of the idea is to allow sufficient light to help establish the herbaceous species. There are a number of existing trees as well.
