Supervisor Water Quality Regional Operations Section Asheville Regional Office Division of Water Resources, NCDEQ 2090 U.S. 70 Highway Swannanoa, NC 28778 Subject: Response to Notice of Violation Nov-2021-LV-0080 Permit No. NCO026557 Bryson City WWTP Swain County 0 . jN\ FEB 12 2021 Water Quality Regional Operations Asheville Regional Office The Town of Bryson City has the following response to the Notice of Violation letter dated February 4, 2021 for the violations that occurred during the month of December at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. According to our ORC and our back-up ORC, they believe someone is continuing to dump unidentified substances into one or more manholes. This is disrupting the operation of the plant. To correct the BOD problem, the plant staff has wasted substantially and hauled 8 loads of new sludge to rehabilitate the plant. The Town has informed our Town crews to look for anything or anyone suspicious around manholes. I have asked our local newspaper editor. to write an article about this situation and urge citizens to contact the Town Hall if they see anyone around manholes. I have also contacted the Bryson City Police Department and asked the police officers to look for anyone suspicious when they are patrolling. With the above efforts, we believe the BOD, 5-day concentration is beginning to improve as evidenced in the December report. Although we exceeded our limit, it was for one week rather than three weeks as in the previous two months violations. We would welcome any other suggestions to correct this problem. Please contact me if you have additional questions concerning this response.
