Subject Request for a NW 14 Permit and DWQ 401 reissuance for the replacement of Bridge # 15 over
Roquist Creek on SR 1 1 12 (Roquist Pocosin Rd) in Berge County WBS # 17BP 1 R 37
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is requesting the reissuance of a NW 14 permit
and corresponding DWQ certification for the replacement of Bridge # 15 in Bertie County The bridge is
located on SR 1 1 12 approximately 2 8-*) miles south of the intersection of NC 308 The bridge spans
Roquist Creek which is characterized as swamp waters within this reach of the creek This portion of
Roquist Creek is classified by DWQ as class C SW waters Bridge # 15 is currently a wooden structure
with umber deck that is 86 ft long by 20ft wide This structure will be removed using NCDOT s
guidelines for bridge demolition and removal The proposed bridge will be replaced on its existing
alignment The new bridge structure will be 100ft in length by 27 ft wide and built with precast cored slab
concrete deck concrete piles and end bents Jurisdictional wetland and surface water impacts have been
avoided and minimized on this project The original permit (Action ID 200510609) authorized 0 15 acres of
wetland impact associated with bridge approach roadway widening The project design has undergone
some minor adjustments and reduced the permanent wetland fill resulting in a final permanent impact of
0 13 acres to riverine wetland The new design has incorporated temporary hand clearing for erosion
control and work site clear zone for crane operation The temporary hand clearing resulted in 0 065 acres
of impact which will revert back to vegetated wetland upon project completion The original permit
