On July 4th, Evergreen Packaging(EP) reported a daily pH exceedance that occurred on
July Yd. The Secondary Effluent pH exceeded the 9.0 daily limit by 0.1 pH units between 17:40
and 18:11. The cause of the elevated pH was insufficient feed of neutralizing chemical added in
the primary effluent. The neutralization system feeds sulfuric acid based on a continuous pH
reading that controls to a set point. The pH probe output was determined to be inaccurate due to
scale buildup on the probe from mill maintenance activities that preceded the high pH event.
The mill currently does pH comparisons every 8 hours between the online meters and laboratory
meters with online meters cleaned and adjusted based on the difference in readings. To mitigate
this and future events and to ensure environmental compliance, pH comparisons will be
conducted every 2 hours during mill maintenance activities.
