WASTEWATER SPILL IN HALIFAX COUNTY Senate Bill 729, effective September 20th, 2014, modifies G.S. 143.215.1C by requiring issuance of a press release within 24 hours (originally 48 hours) after the owner or operator has determined a discharge of 1,000 gallons or more of untreated wastewater to surface waters of the State. In accordance with the regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county (les): On Friday, February 12'', 2021 Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District had one wastewater spill. During this instance, 1,200 gallons are estimated to have spilled from the wastewater collection system from Manhole 109; an isolated manhole in sub -basin 'C', located off 100 Gaston Road in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The spill began at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 9:20 a.m. Untreated wastewater due to heavy rain spilled into the waters of the state tributary to the Roanoke River in the Roanoke River Basin. Preparation is being made for all known repairs necessary to reduce the source of inflow to return the pipe system to service and minimize further discharge. The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on February 12th, 2021 and is reviewing the matter. For more information contact Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District at (252) 537-9137. Thanks!
