Please give a brief project description below.*
The project consists of improvements to the City of Durham's raw
water pumping stations at Lake Michie and Little River Reservoir. See
below for details regarding the proposed work at each pump station.
Little River PS
The project consists of upgrades to the existing raw water pumping
station and raw water intake, as well as construction of a new water
service line along the entrance road. The majority of the upgrade
work will be performed within the existing infrastructure. Components
of the existing gates on the raw water intake, accessible from the
operating deck, will be replaced from the exterior with minor
adjustments to the drain gate being performed by divers in the lake.
Furthermore, spillway roller gate and stop log monorail components,
will be replaced from the exterior. Impacts regulated under Section
401 will be restricted to replacement of components of the existing
gates by divers.
Lake Michie PS
The project consists of upgrades to the existing raw water pumping
station and raw water intake, installation of a new water service line to
the pump station, and installation of a septic system and associated
piping and pumping system to connect the pump station's facilities to
the septic field. The majority of the upgrades will be fully contained
and constructed within the existing infrastructure.
Work on the intake will necessitate maintenance dredging in the lake
to remove accumulated sediment surrounding the intake. Sediment
removal is not expected to extend beyond 200 feet from the intake
structure and will be the minimum necessary to allow the intake work
to be completed. Following the dredging, a coffer cell will be installed
around the intake in order to provide and maintain a dry work area.
The intake upgrades consist of providing new bar screens, new multi-
level withdrawal capabilities, a low-level intake for emergency use,
and a low-level outlet/drain for the lake while maintaining regulated,
minimum release volumes. The intake upgrades will increase the
capacity of the intake, in preparation for possible future increased
demands, but the new pumps installed in this project will not have the
capacity to support the increased intake capacity at this time.
