Failure of an existing 18" reinforced concrete pipe culvert where
gravel road (public access to South Mountain Game Land) crosses
U.T. to Long Branch (N35.66926°, W81.67069°. The road runs
through private tracts, but is maintained by NCWRC management
staff.
Existing RCP has been damaged (apparently by tree roots from large
poplar near outlet) and plugged. Inlet of RCP is buried in about 5' of
sediment. Sediment accumulation over the years has changed the
gradient of the U.T. for approximately 90LF upstream of the culvert
inlet. Original stream channel slope was 6%, and has been reduced
to <1 %. Sinuosity of this section of channel has increased.
Project would involve removal of accumulated sediment from 1,800SF
area upstream of road crossing, and stabilization of excavated area
with vegetation & erosion control matting. Pattern of stream channel
may need adjustment to resemble pattern prior to sediment
accumulation. Installation of new corrugated metal pipe culvert (40FL
of 48" diameter). Removal of large polar near outlet. Reshape and
stabilize road banks following culvert installation.
