At any point in time the SBR's have a minimum level of 9.1 feet. The 9.1 feet in each SBR basin is reserved for the correct concentration of microorganisms. For 120 minutes one of the SBR's will accept raw water while mixing and aerating called the react fill stage. The next stage, after react fill, is a 30 minute react stage where the basin is adequately mixed and aerated to treat the raw water with the microorganisms, with no additional influent being added during this cycle. After the react stage the SBR falls into a settling mode where the sludge settles and then the treated water is decanted with a mechanical decanter to an equalization basin for controlled release to the contact chamber for disinfection. After disinfection the clean finished effluent is discharged into Clark's Creek. After each 4 hour cycle each SBR wastes from the settle sludge for a certain programmed time interval. The wasted sludge is pumped over and stored in one of two available digester where it digests until the sludge is hauled to the Veolia Compost Plant in Hickory. They make a class A product from our sludge. H. Performance The SBR facility continues to produce high quality effluent. In 2010 the WWTP averaged a BOD removal rate of 95.3% and a TSS removal rate of 93.4%. Violations (January 1, 2010— December 31, 2010) Month of March 2010 - We did not achieve an 85% removal rate for solids removal: it was an 84.4%. We contribute this issue to low flow conditions at the plant from time to time. In 2010 we had one day of sampling the influent that only had 50.0 mg& of solids and many other days less than 100 mg/L. We have started using Glycerin as an alternative food source for the weekends, holidays, and other low flow conditions. However we cannot add solids to the headworks to meet the 85% solids removal rate, so we're at the mercy of our influent stream. October 2010 - Week ending 10/16/10 Temperature was reported 4 times, not 5 as required. Week ending 10/23/10 Temperature was reported 3 times, not 5 as required. Week ending 10/30/10 Temperature was reported 3 times, not 5 as required. November 2010 - Week ending 11/12/10 Temperature was reported 4 times, not 5 as required. The issues with the October and November 2010 violations were purely monitoring related and procedures have been put into place to make sure this will not happen again. III. Date: Wastewater Superintendent Town of Maiden Town of Maiden Sewer Collection System For the past fiscal year 2010 the town has not encountered any major issues in our sewer collection system. The town's sewer collection department has been maintaining its collection system with the use of their sewer flusher (to unstop and clean debris from sewer lines that create sewer backups) and their sewer camera (to visually inspect sewer lines). The town treated over 15,000 feet of sewer line with the use of Duke's Root Control again in 2010 for preventive maintenance which reduces the risk of sewer spills and overflows. Duke's Root Control is a company who uses a foaming agent which is inserted into sewer lines for the purpose of killing roots in the sewer collection system. The town's sewer collection department has also been raising manholes along flood prone areas to help reduce the collection systems inflow. In 2010 the town did not encounter any sewer spills or overflows.
