Request for NWP -12 Coverage
Dear Mr Thomas
Kindly find attached the following documents for your consideration
1 Pre Construction Notification — original and one copy including attachments
2 Site Plan —two copies (11 x17 )
The purpose of this project is to provide a way to pump stormwater runoff from a
composting facility to the City of Asheboro wastewater treatment plant Approximately four
(4) feet of temporary stream impact and 480 sf of temporary wetland impact are proposed
No heavy equipment will be allowed for this project only a small trenching machine will be
used to install the 3 force main Vegetation will be cleared by hand especially in the
sensitive areas All side cast material will be put back in the trench or removed so that flow
patterns are not altered
Please let us know if you have any questions or need additional information
Best Regards

Subject Short plant survey of wet area for mstalltion of underground drain
Gerry
Botanist Bruce A Sorne surveyed the NC Zoo site extensively for rare and endangered plants in 1996 He did not
find any at or near the wet area that has been flagged for the underground installation
Today February 17 2012 1 checked the wet area between the Jones Pond outflow and the boneyard along the
perimeter fence This area is dominated by small sweetgum (L►qu►dambar styrac►flua) trees in the overstory and
common privet (L►gustrum s►nense) a widespread invasive species underneath Other trees include red maple
(Acer rubrum) American holly (Ilex opaca) red cedar (Jun►perus wrg►n►anus) and shortleaf pine (Pinus ech►nata)
There are very few native plants at ground level however I did see violets (Viola sp ) blackberry (Rubus sp ) and
roundleaf greenbner (Smilax rotund►fol►a) Other invasive plants present include Japanese honeysuckle (Lon►cera
lapon►ca) multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) and autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellate) These plants are typical of
past disturbance Due to the disturbed condition of the site and the shade from the dense stand of privet it is
highly unlikely that any endangered plant species are present
Please let me know if I can provide any additional information on this site

Subject Wildlife at the Zoo
Attachments Wildlife VERTEBRATES OF THE NORTH CAROLINA ZOOLOGICAL PARK (2) doc
Gerry
For the past 19 years I have been (in association with other knowledgeable staff members) keeping a checklist of
the wildlife (animals) at the zoo and a certain that we know what is on site and what is not on site This activity
has not produced any federally endangered or threatened vertebrates on zoo grounds
I am familiar with the wet area that is between Jones Pond outflow and the bone yard along the security fence at
this site Several species of frogs regularly breed at or near this site (chorus frogs spring peepers green frog
and gray treefrogs) Bullfrogs greenfrogs gray treefrogs spring peepers and cricket frogs breed at Jones Pond
Osprey have been know to fly onto our lakes on the site but these birds are occasional visitors and do not use
the stream outflow from Jones Pond or Jones Pond itself (pond is too small and shallow for their use) I have also
heard of one or two Bal Eagles that have occasionally been observed over our North American Lake but these
would also be occasional visitors This bird species has not been observed in the area reference in your
document I have not been able to confirm sightings of the Bald Eagle on our site The fish at Jones Pond are
not endangered or threatened species There are no fish with the possible exception of some small minnows
that occasionally might use this small stream at certain times of the year but in the last 10 years I have not
observed any in it I have attached a crude checklist of the vertebrates known from this site
Please let me know if I can be f further service to your needs
John
