Dear Ms. Gibby,
We are writing in reference to your letter dated December 21, 2011, regarding the November 4,
2011, Public Notice for the proposed impacts associated with the modifications to the Ararat
River at the North Carolina Granite Corporation (NCGC) in Mount Airy,,Surry County, North
Carolina. We have been coordinating with Mr. Monte Matthews of the Raleigh Regulatory Field
Office in this matter.
We have reviewed the five response letters and are gathering information, in order to submit a
complete response. Since our previous letter, NCGC has contracted Baker Engineering to
conduct the studies required to receive a No -Rise Certification from FEMA. The data for the
HEC2 modeling provided by FEMA was paper print out, not the actual modeling data. As such,
this information is being transferred into the electronic format required to run the HEC2 model.
This study will also ultimately provide the hydraulic data needed to address other concerns
highlighted in the response letters. We anticipate having the results of this study and the other
required information submitted by March 31, 2012.
We are aware of, and sensitive to, the urgency of this matter and are working to address these
issues in a thorough and expedient manner. Mr. Matthews is assisting us in acquiring some of
the information, and we will continue to coordinate closely with him as to the most prudent way
to move forward with a detailed plan of action.
