SUBJECT B 4722 B Replacement of Bridge No 33 on US70 over North River in Carteret
County
On March 17 2011 a meeting was held to discuss the alternative developed to replace Bridge
No 33 with the agencies The result of that meeting was that NCDOT would consider an
alternative which would provide a longer bridge and remove a portion of the causeway NCDOT
developed two additional alternatives and met with the agencies on January 19 2012 to discuss
NCDOT provided three alternatives the original proposal to replace with a bridge approximately
1150 foot long to the north with no causeway removal replace with a bridge approximately
1350 foot long to the north with possibly 7 200 c y of causeway removal and replace with a
bridge approximately 1750 foot long to the north with possibly 18 500 c y of causeway removal
A brief discussion established two points of concern due to environmental conditions (High
Quality Waters aquatic habitat primary nursery area and other related concerns deck drains
would not be allowed and avoidance of Impacts to coastal wetlands to the greatest extent
possible — leading to the 1350 foot bridge alternative being the most preferred of the three
NCDOT agreed to pursue the following Items during development of the 1350 foot alternative
• Remove the maximum amount of the causeway practicable along the west end of the
existing bridge — down to substrate Note the use of turbidity curtains may be possible
for this causeway removal
• Leave a portion of the existing causeway on the west end of existing for public access
• Maintain vertical opening as close to existing as possible when adjusting grades to allow
for drainage
• Treat storm water at ends of proposed bridge
NCDOT will continue to develop the 1350 foot alternative Once grades and Impacts are known
NCDOT will provide a copy to the agencies for review
