Project Description: Replace Bridge No. 72 on SR 2226 (Lavender Road) over Buffalo
Creek (off-site detour planned, no improvements anticipated).
SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW
DESCRIPTION OF REVIEW ACTIVITIES,RESULTS,AND CONCLUSIONS:HPOWeb reviewed on 1 March 2016
and yielded no NR, SL, LD, DE, or SS properties in the Area of Potential Effects (APE). Cleveland County
current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a mostly wooded APE with
resources dating from the 2000s and 2010s (viewed 1 March 2016). Bridge No. 72, built in 1961, is not
eligible for the National Register as it is not representative of any distinctive engineering or aesthetic
type. Google Maps"Street View"confirmed the relative placement of the various resources and the
absence of critical historic buildings and structures and landscapes in the APE (viewed 1 March 2016).
No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined.
WHY THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION PROVIDES A RELIABLE BASIS FOR REASONABLY PREDICTING THAT
THERE ARE NO UNIDENTIFIED SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL OR LANDSCAPE RESOURCES IN
THE PROJECT AREA: APE extends 400 feet from each end of the existing bridge (NW-SE) and 150 feet to
either side of the SR 2226 (Lavender Road) center line (SW-NE) to encompass proposed construction.
The comprehensive county architectural survey (1996-1998) and later studies include no properties in the
APE (Brian R. Eades,Architectural Perspectives of Cleveland County,North Carolina(Shelby,NC:Cleveland County Historic
Preservation Taskforce,2003)). County GIS/tax materials and other visuals support the absence of significant
architectural and landscape resources in the APE subject to GS 121-12(a) and Section 106 compliance.
Should any aspect of the project design change,
please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture as additional review may be necessary.
