Subject Request for a NW 3 Permit and DWQ 401 for the replacement of Low Impact Bridge # 87 over
East Most Swamp on SR 1354 (Nixon Rd) in Berne County WBS # 45347 l 11
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is requesting the issuance of a NW 3 permit
and corresponding DWQ certification for the replacement of Low Impact Bridge # 87 in Berne County
The bridge is located on SR 1354 approximately 0 45 miles west of the intersection of SR 1354 and NC 45
in Berne County The bridge spans Eastmost Swamp which is a tributary to the Salmon Creek Eastmost
Swamp is classified by DWQ as class C NSW waters Bridge # 87 is currently a wood/concrete structure
with concrete deck that is 30 ft long by 24 ft wide This structure will be removed using NCDOT s
guidelines for bridge demolition and removal The proposed bridge will be replaced on its existing
alignment The new bridge structure will be 55 in length by 25 wide and built with precast cored slab
concrete deck concrete piles and concrete end bents An off site detour will be utilized during
construction Jurisdictional impacts will result in 1 268 sq ft (0 029 acres) of permanent wetland impacts
and 1 403 sq ft (0 032 acres) of temporary hand clearing impacts The temporary impacts will be allowed
to vegetate after project completion This bridge is foilowmg the Low Impact Bridge Process estaolished by
FHWA NCDOT and NC Regulatory Agencies
