Subject Proposed Martin Marietta Mine in Beaufort County
First of all I want to wish you both the best of a new year and I hope you had a Merry Christmas this past
season
Next I want to express my concern over the lack of accurate information and research that appears to be lacking
in the Proposed Martin Marietta Inc Mine Beaufort County I was surprised to learn of this and find the
general public knew little about the proposed mine until recently when the comment period was within about 7
days of expiring Luckily the comment period has been extended for another 2 weeks
I am asking you to PLEASE help us who own property in Beaufort or Craven county those who fish the
rivers /creeks and people who depend on the fisheries for a living by insisting that a thorough set of studies be
done to fully understand impact of this proposed operation As I understand it studies need to assess impact on
drinking water supply Blounts Creek habitat and environment/land surrounding this beautiful and quaint area
of eastern NC
I grew up in eastern NC Over the past few years I've had the pleasure of taking my father fishing many times
on Blounts Creek and on area rivers right up until he died in June 2011 He was 84 when he died I returned to
him what he gave me when I was a child He taught me things about life when we fished together as a child
that I could never have learned in college or in any other environment Now I am teaching the 2 younger
generations of my family those things that can only be learned by experiencing nature up close and in person
along the creeks and rivers of eastern NC These things along with my college degree and career as a Director
in a corporation that does business around the world has made me a well rounded individual I look forward to
sharing these experiences with generations to come
I know of people outside Beaufort/Craven county who come here to camp fish and hunt which all helps our
state economically These people share their stories with me On the creeks in this area it s not unusual to see
eagles soar pelicans dive down to eat their favorite food and bottle nosed dolphins swim up and down Blounts
creek The sea gulls swoop down to eat minnows that the stepped bass puppy drum or flounder also enjoy The
crabs flourish well up Blounts creek where I own property I see small dumping mullet year round along with
trout who go well up creek in the winter
Information I've seen so far in Martin Marietta's study says no anadromous ,juvenile fish species (like
striped bass) were found in upper Blounts Creek I can say for a fact that this is absolutely not true
information from Martin Marietta I ve caught stripped bass fingerlings many timeb every year for the past 5
years while fishing early June for brim in the upper, creek Stripped bass do spawn in the upper areas of Blounts
Creek And people who fish these areas know that where stripped bass spawn in eastern NC is where herring
also spawn With Martin Marietta's inaccurate information on this one fact, I question validity of their
studies How can we be assured that information and studies are objective and accurate9 This is where
I please ask for your help
The fishery in Blounts Creek along with the wildlife that surrounds the water and esturaries
are thriving because residents and others who use the creek care about a long lasting environment that
generations long after us can enjoy With your help I know information and good decision making is possible
in this matter
