HomeMy WebLinkAbout20111013 Ver 1_Public Comments_20120103 (7)11, 1 Q��' Mcmillan, Ian From Reeder Tom Sent Tuesday January 03 2012 11 27 AM To Higgins Karen Mcmillan Ian Subject FW Martin Marietta Mining petition vs Blounts Creek (Creek) and the Castle Hayne Aquifer Tom Reeder Director NC Division of Water Resources Phone 919 715 3045 email tom reeder @ncdenr gov From Bob <freshwaterbob @dishmail net> Date Mon 2 Jan 2012 15 55 29 0500 To Govenor Perdue <govenor office @nc gov> Cc Dee Freeman <dee freeman @ncdenr gov> <randell woodruff @co beaufort nc us> <chuck walked @ncdenr gov> Tom Reeder <tom reeder @ncdenr gov> Subject Martin Marietta Mining petition vs Blounts Creek (Creek) and the Castle Hayne Aquifer Governor Perdue, My name is Robert(Bob) D Ebe I live in a community called Freshwater in Blounts Creek, NC This community is named after the navigable Creek that flows thru the township and into the Pamlico River The natural resources available to all the homeowners in the community are fishing in brackish waters for Rockfish in season, flounder, bass enjoying boating, skiing, tubing and crabbing for blue fin crabs I moved here in'97 and built a house in a community which offered these amenities and have enjoyed the Creek as it is known as ever since This brings me to the point of this E Mail Martin Marietta Mining is petitioning the Corps of Engineers to dig an open pit quarry covering more than 640 acres that will fulfill their needs for 50 years This open pit mine will be over 100 feet deep and will need to pump more than 9 million gallons of water daily from the Castle Hayne Aquifer to keep the quarry dry and process the rock daily Then they will funnel the discharge into two 5 5 mile ditches dug to flow this water, 375,000 gals per hour into tributaries (headwaters) that form the Blounts Creek This will go on for 24 hours a day and 365 days a year No more small fish fry,vegetation or fish will survive in this environment Gone will be the Bald Eagles so majestic in flight only to swoop down into the Creek to catch fish for the eaglets in their nests which border the Creek The porpoise which visit the Creek 1 will no longer be able to swim in this discharged water Presently the Creek is brackish water suitable for all habitat Martin Marietta has said on record that because of the extensive disturbance of the mining operation, wetlands and water impacts are unavoidable Since when does our government allow a private for profit Company to ruin natural resources, habitat and waters that will never come back to a healthy conditions I presently am connected to a well for potable water from the same Aquifer that will be severely impacted by this drawdown if allowed The Beaufort County Water Dep't' Is also very concerned since this mine and the deep wells associated with it if it gets the go ahead could have an adverse effect on supplying water within District 6 which supplies water to Blounts Creek residents on County water Thank you for taking your time to read this and am asking to use your political clout to halt this petition before it gets any further along Robert D Ebe 7651© i 240 Freshwater Dr Blounts Creek, NC 27814 252 322 9933(h) 252 944
