SUBJECT: Additional WRC Comments on Duke Energy Belews Creek Steam Station Permit
Stokes County, Action ID. 2011 -00972
Dear Mr. Thomas:
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC) offered comments to you regarding this
permit action on July 22, 2011. The applicant has since modified the proposal. These additional
comments are offered for your consideration under provisions of the Clean Water Act of 1977 (33 U.S.C.
466 et. seq.) and the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (48 Stat. 401, as amended; 16 U.S.C. 661- 667d).
We concur with the USFWS's December 21, 2011 recommendations on the amended application.
Specifically, short of Alternative B, expansion of the FGD landfill is environmentally preferably because
it would involve less up -front impacts to streams and wetlands while allowing more data collection and,
presumably, a more definitive evaluation of long -term disposal needs.
Thank you for the opportunity to review and comment further on this regulatory action. Please contact
me at (828) 452 -0422 extension 24 if you have any questions about these comments.
Sincerely,
Dave McHenry
