Description of system:
The Caledonia Wastewater Treatment Plant is permitted to treat 0.5 MGD from
Tillery Correctional and Caledonia Correctional lnstitute, which includes an
industrial cannery. The collection system includes four lift stations, gravity
collection pipes, and force mains. Treatment consists of two primary lagoons in
parallel, followed by two sets of wetlands in parallel, and then disinfection before
it is pumped to discharge into the Roanoke River. Routine maintenance includes
managing plant growth; managing detrimentalwildlife population by trapping; and
maintaining general access and berm areas.
Repairs and improvements performed during 2020:
t. Construction completed on a new disinfection system, DEQATC: 027626A05.
The design engineer has had to make modifications during the warranty
period with the project remaining open.
2. Miscellaneous maintenance/repairs completed at lift stations.
3. Six loads of wetland sludge removed from around effluent pipes to assist
with treatment. Sludge returned to lagoons.
4. Multiple truckloads of flowable fill placed to assist with berm erosion and
damage.
5. Engineeringfirm hired and design started on large planned upgrade project
to improve treatment.
6. Cannery purchased equipment and implemented pH adjustment to be
utilized when processing carrots and sweet potato.
Summary of System Performance for 2O2O
Between January L, 2O2A and December 31,,2020, the Caledonia Wastewater
Treatment plant treated an average of 230,000 gallons per day. The wastewater is
tested a minimum of 300 times a year to show compliance with the National
Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit. Project warranty issues related to
the new disinfection system caused 2 of the over 300 tested samples to be
noncompliant with the permit limits. The first event happened in January related
to Aquatic Toxicity and the other event occurred in August related to Fecal
Coliform. After identification of these issues, additional procedures were
implemented to assure future compliance until such time that the disinfection
system improvements are finalized.
