ROADWAY DESCRIPTION
The proect consists of construction of a new 90 feet long 33 box beam bridge to replace
the existing 40 feet long bridge #20 on SR 1705 over Ford Creek The total proect length
is 0 121 miles The proect is located in the Tar Pamlico River Basin The proect
drainage system consists of grass shoulders grated inlets with associated pipes and rip
rap pads at the pipe outfalls
Jurisdictional Streams Ford Creek
ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTION
The proect is located within the Tar-Pamlico Rtver Basin in Granville County The
stream is classified as C NSW There are no wetlands m the proect area Tar Pamlico
Buffer Rules have been adopted for the proect Storm water impacts to the stream have
been mimmized by utilizmg sheet flow on grass shoulders along the roadway draimng
bridge stormwater to existing grassed swale and compliance wrth Buffer Rules to
provide sheet flow before entering the stream The existing drainage patterns have been
maintained with the hydraulic design of the proect
BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND MAJOR STRUCTURES
The primary goal of Best Management Practices (BMPs) is to prevent degradation of the
states surface waters by the location construction and operation of the highway system
The BMPs are activities practices and procedures taken to prevent or reduce stormwater
pollution The BMP measures used on this proect to reduce stormwater impacts are
Sheet flow on rass shoulders along the roadway
This will promote infiltration and filtration of pavement runoff by directing sheet flow
over grassed shoulder slopes
Dischar e bridge stormwater to existinrassed swale
Stormwater from the bridge will be drained to an existing grassed swale at 13+35 LT in a
wooded area to provide approximately 100' of flow before entering the buffer This will
promote infiltration and filtration of pavement runoff over grassed linmg of the swale
Compliance wrth Buffer Rules to provide diffuse flow
NW quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section and no proposed ditch or storm drain
outlet (concentrated flow) is expected through buffer Thus sheet flow will be provided
through buffer
NE quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section and no prot-osed drtch or storm drain
outlet (concentrated flow) is expected through buffer i hus sheet flow will be provided
through buffer
SE quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section and no proposed ditch is expected
through buffer Sheet flow will be provided through buffer Stormwater from the bridge
will be drained to an existing grassed swale at 13+35 LT in a wooded area to provide
approximately 100 of flow before entering the buffer This will promote infiltration and
filtration of pavement runoff over grassed lining of the swale
SW quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section and no proposed ditch or storm drain
outlet (concentrated flow) is expected through buffer Thus sheet flow will be provided
through buffer
No deck drains
This will avoid direct discharge of storm water from the bridge deck into the receiving
water
Bank stabilization
Bank stabilization wrth class II rip rap is provided on both sides of the stream under the
bridge deck after removal of existing end bents to provide long-term bank stabilrty to
prevent erosion This will provide a stable steam and the stream will not degrade m the
evolution process Additionally the north bank of the side stream will be stabilized with
Class VII select material
NCDOT BMP to dewater
NCDOT standard BMP will be used along stream banks to dewater and isolate adacent
work area in order to remove existing concrete footer in the dry and to mstall rip rap on
side stream
