ROADWAY DESCRIPTION
The proect consists of construction of a new 110 feet long 21 cored slab bridge to
replace the existing 97 feet long bridge #67 on SR 1120 over Red Bud Creek The total
proJect length is 0 145 miles The proect is located in the Tar Pamlico River Basin The
proect drainage system consists of grass shoulders grassed swale grated inlets with
associated pipes and a preformed scour hole at the pipe outfall
Jurisdictional Streams Red Bud Creek
ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTION
The proect is located wrthin the Tar Pamlico River Basin in Vance County The stream
is classified as C NSW There is a non 404 isolated wetland in the northwest quadrant of
the bridge Tar Pamlico Buffer Rules have been adopted for the proect Storm water
impacts to the stream have been mimmized by utilizing sheet flow on grass shoulders
along the roadway using grassed swale & preformed scour hole and compliance wrth
Buffer Rules to provide diffuse flow through buffer or control stormwater's mtrogen
before entering the stream Wetland impact has been reduced to a mimmum by avoiding
drtching through the wetland The existmg drainage patterns have been maintamed wrth
the hydraulic design of the proect
BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND MAJOR STRUCTURES
The primary goal of Best Management Practices (BMPs) is to prevent degradation of the
states surface waters by the location construction and operation of the highway system
The BMPs are activrties practices and procedures taken to prevent or reduce stormwater
pollution The BMP measures used on this proect to reduce stormwater impacts are
Sheet flow on rass shoulders along the roadway
This will promote mfiltration and filtration of pavement runoff by directing sheet flow
over grassed shoulder slopes
Performed scour hole
Stormwater from the bridge will be drained to a preformed scour hole at 14+72 LT to
dissipate energy to provide a non-erosive sheet (diffuse) flow to the buffer
Grassed swale
Proposed grassed swale in southwest quadrant will be installed to replace existing
drtch/swale Grassed swale treats runoff through physical filtration infiltration and
biofiltration 1t wil control stormwater s nrtrogen before entering the stream
Compliance witll Buffer Rules to provide diffuse flow or control mtro en
NW quadrant Proposed roadway is m fill section and no proposed ditch (concentrated
flow) is expected through buffer Bridge stormwater will be drained to the preformed
scour hole to diffuse flow Thus sheet flow will be provided through buffer
NE quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section to retain existing drtch The existing
ditch is draining away from the buffer There are no storm drain pipe outlets Thus sheet
flow will be provided through buffer
SE quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section and no proposed drtch or storm dram
outlet (concentrated flow) is expected through buffer Thus, sheet flow will be provided
through buffer
SW quadrant Proposed roadway is in fill section The proposed lateral grassed swale will
be installed to control stormwater s mtrogen before entermg the stream
No deck drains
This will avoid direct dtscharge of storm water from the bridge deck mto the receivmg
water
Bank stabilization
Bank stabilization with class II rip rap is provided on both sides of the stream at the
bridge crossing to provide long term bank stability to prevent erosion This will provide a
stable steam and the stream will not degrade m the evolution process
