NOTICE OF A CITIZENS' INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR OPERATIONAL AND
SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS TO COLINGTON ROAD (STATE ROAD 1217) FROM
WHERE COLINGTON ROAD ENDS TO U.S. 158 (CROATAN HIGHWAY)

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold the above
Citizens' Informational Workshop on Monday, October 24, 2011, between the hours of
4-7 p.m. at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall (Commissioners Meeting Room), located at
102 Town Hall Drive in Kill Devil Hills.
NCDOT representatives will be available in an informal, open house-style setting
to answer questions and gather public input regarding the proposed project. The
opportunity to submit written comments or questions will be provided and is
encouraged. Citizens may attend at any time during the meeting. There will not be a
formal presentation.
NCDOT is currently studying operational and safety improvements to Colington
Road (SR 1217) from where it ends to U.S. 158 (Croatan Highway). Proposed
improvements include widening the existing roadway to two 11-foot travel lanes,
constructing 4-foot paved shoulders on each side of the roadway, and raising the grade
of the roadway in areas that are currently flooding. The proposed project is
approximately 4.3 miles in length. It is scheduled for right-of-way acquisition to begin in
September 2015, followed by letting the project to contract in March 2017. These dates
are subject to change.
