Statement Endorsing the Expansion of The Lower Rocky River Reservoir
Atlanta, GA, November 6, 2003 -- Gold Kist is pleased to support the Town of
Siler City in its project to expand the Lower Rocky River Reservoir. This expansion is
essential to help meet the Town's current and future water supply needs through the year
2030. Recently droughts have greatly impacted the health and safety of the residents and
affected businesses in Siler City. During one drought, Gold Kist had to cut back
production and used tanker trucks to haul water to the reservoir to continue operations.
We believe the Town has thoroughly reviewed its options and has worked closely
with various state and federal agencies to study and address all of the environmental
impacts that may occur as a result of the expansion. The agencies have found that the
project will have "no significant impact" on the environment. The Town has taken
additional actions to further limit the possibility of environmental impact.
We, at Gold Kist, encourage the community to support this project to expand the
Lower Rocky Reservoir to secure an adequate and reliable water source, which can meet
the Town's current and future water supply needs.
