Project Description
This project consists of approach roadway work and the replacement of Bridge #21 over Pungo Creek/Acre
Swamp on NC 32. The existing 2 lane facility has 12' lanes. The proposed facility will improve to 2 lanes
w/ 12' lanes, 2' paved shoulders and 6' shoulders. The existing 1 @ 23'-3", 1 @ 22'-3", 1 @2 P-9", 1 @ 23'-
9" (91' total) bridge will be replaced with a3 @40'-21" cored slab bridge (120' total). There are CAMA
wetlands in the NE, NW, SE and SW quadants of the project.
Project Involvement
The project will require widening of the existing road/fill with wider lanes and the addition of wider
shoulders and guardrail. The drainage at the site consists of ephemeral drainage ditches. There are CAMA
wetlands in the NE, NW, SE and SW quadants of the project. Pungo Creek/Acre Swamp is classified as C;
Sw: NSW and is a Public Trust Water.
Best Management Practices
Best Management Practices (BMPs) utilized on the project are as follows:
-Promotion of sheet flow and infiltration with grassed shoulders and grassed swales pror to
discharge into buffer.
-Outlet drainage systems to grassed swales.
-No deck drains on bridge
-Longer bridge improves conveyance and reduces bridge opening velocities.
