Dear Cyndi,
I am Jim Kulibert, Sales Manager for Sparcraft in the US and have been in this business since
October 1977. We have built literally thousands of new and replacement spars for all the boat
builders large and small, marinas, sail makers, boat yards and have worked with Bennett Brother
Yachts for about 20 years. The industry that we support employs thousands of people both
directly and in directly. Wilmington has a long history of shipyards and wharves dating in some
cases back as far as Pre-revolutionary War.
Marinas provide marine industry jobs, public access for boating and it is not good for
docks to sit on the silt. This causes early unbudgeted maintenance and potential damage
to boats.
The maintenance dredging that is required should be good for the fishing industry as well
as is allows water for the adolescent fish to develop.
At this point, the private industry is willing to pay for the dredging. If is isn't allowed,
the silt build up will merge into the shipping channels and the US Government will be
required to pay using taxpayer's money.
Please do what you can to allow the dredging to continue as it benefits all parties.
Thank you in advance & best regards,
Jim Kulibert
